Two Vols were named the Southeastern Conference swimming and diving athletes of the week. Senior diver Michael Wright was named the SEC Diver of the Week while swimmer Oystein Hetland was named the league's Freshman of the Week.
Wright led the field on the first day of the Tennessee Diving Invitational, dominating the 1-meter springboard with a 391.95-point first-place score, more than 50 points ahead of second place. He followed that up with two more solid days at the invite, finishing second on 3-meter and fourth on platform.
But the Forest Park, Ill., native wasn't finished. Against No. 10 Virginia, Wright reenergized the Big Orange with a 448.95-point pool record mark on the 3-meter, less than two points off the school record. Wright swept the boards against UVA, winning the 1-meter with 380.55 points.
In a very close dual-meet win over the Cavaliers, Hetland helped lift the Vols to victory with the first win of his collegiate career in the 100 fly with a time of 48.56 seconds. Hetland got the first of four straight event wins to end the meet as Tennessee went on to knock off Virginia 156-144. He was also the top freshman point winner for the Big Orange, adding 28 points to the Vols' final total. Hetland also finished second in the 50 free and setup the meet-winning 400 free relay victory.
