KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--The bond between members of the 1989 Tennessee men's swim team is still strong. More than 20 years later it can still be seen at the Tom Wolfe Golf Classic, a memorial golf tournament started by 1989 team member John Matson.
Held at the Willow Valley Golf Club, the tournament raises money for the United Way Foundation. The event begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and the cost is $100 per player.
"The tournament is to raise funds for United Way in Tom's honor," Matson said. "The event is open to the public, and as you can imagine, we'd love to have as many people as possible."
Wolfe, a four-time Tennessee swimming letterman, passed away in March 2009 from heart complications.
In 1985, Wolfe, a Plattsburgh, N.Y., native, blazed a trail to The Hill from Mercersberg Academy--a path his high school coach John Trembley would follow just three years later.
Once a Vol, Wolfe would etch his name into Big Orange history, earning All-America status in 1987 and winning the SEC 400 I.M. championship in 1988. His four years at Tennessee culminated in being elected team captain in 1989, his senior season.
Once Trembley came home to coach the Vols in 1988, all the pieces were in place. Under Wolfe's leadership and Trembley's direction, the Vols won their first SEC Championship in 11 years.
