In an attempt to defend his 2010 USA Diving title, Tennessee senior Michael Wright competed at the AT&T National Championships on Wednesday in College Station, Texas.
The Forest Park, Ill., native came just shy of that mark, placing fifth in the nation on the one-meter springboard with his 376.60-point score.
"He moved up three spots from his prelims place, "diving coach Dave Parrington said. "He finished fifth in the country amid a tough group of competitors.
"He was just a little bit off on one dive or he would've been more in the mix for another title."
Wright won the one-meter championship in February and became USA Diving's first African-American champion.
