Day one of the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships took a little extra time to get started. After a one-day delay due to illness, the meet got started and Tennessee ended the first day in 16th place.
"After day one, we are about where we expected to be," head coach John Trembley said. "We had great swims by our guys today and all six swimmers have reached All-America status after one day."
The 200 freestyle relay squad of junior Michael DeRocco, freshmen Ed Walsh and Ryan Harrison and sophomore Ricky Henahan took 13th place with a time of one minute 19.00 seconds. With that placement these four Vols earn honorable mention All-America status.
The Vols followed that with a 10th place finish in the 400 medley relay, clocking a time of three minutes and 8.56 seconds. Henahan, SEC champ Brad Craig, DeRocco and Harrison all earn honorable mention All-America status with that finish.
With day one in the books, Tennessee is in 16th place with 32.5 points. Texas holds the top spot with 145 points.
Looking to gain some steam, the Vols face a slate of events on day two that should highlight their strengths. Saturday's schedule of events features the 200 medley relay, the 400 I.M., the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, three-meter diving and the 800 freestyle relay.
"Day two can be a good one for us," Trembley said. "We will need the guys to step up in the individual events."
