KNOXVILLE--Tennessee head coach John Trembley put as much pressure on his team as he could, working them through weight training and extra laps during the Tennessee Invitational.
But the results were what he was looking for--a strong final day of competition. The Vols finished third with 932.5 points behind first-place Alabama with 1,191 points and Virginia Tech at 975.5 points. Kentucky finished fourth with 566 points.
"We really beat our guys up during this meet," Trembley said. "We trained very hard and challenged them to have a good last day--and it was a good last day."
Led by freshman Samuel Rairden, the Vols posted very strong swims on Saturday. The Richmond, Va., native won the 200 backstroke in one minute 47.85 seconds.
"Sam's win was huge," Trembley said. "Sam had a fantastic race. He is just getting it done. I really think he is going to be one of those special student-athletes in the history of Tennessee athletics."
Junior Anders Storvik finished 11th with a one minute 50.87-second time. Chris Winchell placed 12th in one minute 51.10 seconds followed by Ricky Henahan in 14th with a one minute 52.47-second time. Michael Christy won the bonus final in one minute 49.80 seconds.
The mile freestyle also boasted strong finishes by young Vols, although the best finish was by senior and school-record holder in the event, Geoff Sanders. Finishing less than 10 seconds off his own school-best mark, Sanders claimed second place in 15 minutes 2.08 seconds.
"I am really proud of Geoff today," Trembley said. "His mile swim was terrific--it was just amazing."
Right behind Sanders was sophomore Norbert Kovacs in third in 15 minutes 28.90 seconds and freshman Sam Petersen in fourth in 15 minutes 41.53 seconds. Freshman Christoffer Wallin placed 10th in 15 minutes 59.84 seconds. Senior Scott Friderichs placed 13th in 16 minutes 16.05 seconds. Junior
Senior Michael DeRocco paced the Vols in the 100 free with a 45.21-second time. Sophomore Ed Walsh finished seventh in 45.73 seconds. Freshman Oystein Hetland won the consolation final with a 45.43-second mark followed by fellow freshman Troy Tillman in 11th (45.55 seconds) and Clint Johnson in 13th (45.85 seconds). Rairden placed 16th in 47.40 seconds.
Brad Craig finished second in the 200 breaststroke in two minutes 1.71 seconds followed by Jake Epperson in fifth with a two minute 3.74-second time. Christy won the consolation final in two minutes 4.35 seconds with junior Derek Paul close behind in 10th with a two minute 6.20-second mark. Freshman Zack Burnett finished 14th in two minutes 8.55 seconds and senior Mattias Kahlin placed 15th in two minutes 8.78 seconds. Freshman Renato Prono won the bonus final in two minutes 6.46 seconds
Kovacs had a strong finish in the 200 fly, taking third place with a one-minute 47.58 second B-cut time.
In the platform diving event, Ryan Helms placed third with 322.55 points and sophomore Jordan Mauney (255.25 points) and Brent Sterling (251.35 points) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
"This was our first time out on platform this year and I think we did reasonably well," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "This meet was great preparation for the championship season. I think it will pay dividends down the road."
The relay team of Johnson, Christy, Storvik and Rairden finished third in the 400 freestyle to close out the meet with a three minute 0.53-second B-cut mark.
Tennessee concludes the fall portion of the 2010-11 schedule and is idle from swimming completion until a Jan. 9, 2011, dual-meet with Virginia. The Vols will host the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Jan. 3-5.
