KNOXVILLE--The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team posted strong finishes on day one of the Tennessee Invitational and will begin day two in second place behind first-place Alabama.
The Tide hold the top spot with 375.5 points. Tennessee is second with 280.5 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 230 points and Kentucky at 159 points.
"We had an OK first day of racing," head coach John Trembley said. "We made a few technical errors but overall I think we had pretty good times. Like I said, day one was OK but we need to be better tomorrow."
The Vols started strong with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Michael DeRocco, Oystein Hetland, Ed Walsh and Ricky Henahan swam just shy of an NCAA B-cut with a one minute 22.62-second mark.
On the boards, junior diver Ryan Helms notched a second-place finish behind Alabama's Adam Booher on the one-meter. Helms finished with 368.70 points, barely off of Booher's 369.80. Sophomore Brent Sterling finished sixth with a 317.00-point score and Jordan Mauney posted a career-best 301.85 points in his seventh-place finish.
"I would have liked to see Ryan get the win, but he had a pretty solid first day," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Brent did well and Jordan's performance provided a good confidence booster for him. We were overall pretty solid today."
Other first day high points for UT were fourth- and fifth-place finishes by Jake Epperson (1:51.57) and Michael Christy (1:51.92), respectively, in the 200 individual medley.
DeRocco (20.53) and Walsh (20.61) also finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Troy Tillman came in ninth place, winning the consolation final with a 20.67-second time.
To finish out day one of the invite, the Vols took third in the 400 medley relay. The team of Henahan, Brad Craig, DeRocco and Walsh swam to time of three minutes 18.14 seconds.
Swimming preliminaries begin Friday at 10 a.m. and finals will get started at 6 p.m. Diving prelims will begin at noon and finals will start with the women's one-meter at 5 p.m.
