The slimmest of margins separated the 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers and the eighth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
Unfortunately for the Vols, Ohio State held the two-point advantage at the end of competition Friday as Tennessee lost its first meet of the season 151-149.
"We lost a close one," Tennessee head coach John Trembley said. "The guys raced very hard and we did show much improvement from our past meets. The coaches and athletes now know what we must address in order to achieve our mission."
Tennessee (3-1) had seven individual event winners and the team of Samuel Rairden, Ryan Harrison, Mike DeRocco and Ed Walsh finished first in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
DeRocco, one of the captains for the Vols, and Brad Craig led the way with two event wins each. DeRocco won the 50 freestyle in 20.59 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 45.11. Craig finished first in the 100 breaststroke (55.53) and the 200 breaststroke (2:00.64).
Geoff Sanders won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:14.82.
In diving, the Vols finished in three of the top four places in the one-meter dive, with Michael Wright winning with a score of 341.85. Ryan Helms won the three-meter dive, grading out at 400.20.
"We did a solid job today," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I was pleased with the first, second and fourth on one-meter. Although we didn't dive great, we fought hard for a good result. Ryan achieved his goal score for the day in the three meter."
Ohio State (3-0) also defeated Miami of Ohio 144-79 as part of a double header Friday.
The Vols return to home waters Nov. 18-20 for the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville.
