KNOXVILLE--Sophomore Norbert Kovacs swam to three individual wins in Thursday's season-opening dual meet to help Tennessee down Louisville 197-103.
"Norbert had a solid day," head coach John Trembley said. "He had a great race in the 200 fly against some really tough competitors. He had some fine swims today."
Kovacs kicked off his first full collegiate season with a win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of nine minutes 22.71 seconds. The Budapest, Hungary, native also claimed first place in 200 butterfly with a one minute 48.42-second mark. Kovacs claimed the top spot in the 500 freestyle behind a time of four minutes 34.85 seconds.
"I really wanted to do my best," Kovacs, a 2008 Olympian, said. "Coach talked to me about making some changes this week and I feel like I was able to make some of them. "
Kovacs wasn't the only Vol making waves, however, as senior co-captain Michael Wright shattered his own school record on the one-meter springboard.
Wright nailed his final dive to score a career-best 414.00-point score. The mark is also an Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center record. Wright previously held the school record of 396.00 points in February.
"The one-meter event was a treat to be involved in," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "I don't want us to get complacent, but it was a great day. Both Mike's and Ryan's scores were high for this time of year. It was a very impressive performance--our top three guys all had career bests on the one-meter."
The win improves Tennessee to 1-0 (0-0 SEC) heading into their first road test on Oct. 29 at University of the Cumberlands. The Vols will take on the Patriots before moving on to SEC rival Kentucky on Oct. 30.
Other winners today include Ryan Harrison (200 freestyle, 1:39.82), Ricky Henahan (100 backstroke, 48.93) and Michael DeRocco (50 freestyle, 20.41; 100 butterfly 49.03).
