Tennessee Traditions: The Timettes

This is part one of a five part series that features the traditions of the Tennessee swimming and diving program.
In Big Orange Country, tradition carries more weight than gold. It is the fabric which holds together Vols of all generations and the source of the magical feeling that surrounds The University of Tennessee. However, not all Vol customs are widely renowned. One such tradition has been flying under the radar for the past four decades.
The Timettes organization was founded in 1967 by legendary head swimming coach Ray Bussard. The intention was to get students more invested in the program and to aid in dual-meet management. Since then, the Timettes have been faithfully serving the program in that capacity, and each year more than 30 UT students volunteer their time in service to the swimming and diving team.
"I joined the Timettes as a freshman," Timettes' senior co-captain Morgan Howell said. "It is so rewarding to be on the deck and helping the team. It feels great to contribute."
Currently, the Timettes serve as backup timers and meet management assistants. They support the program in many capacities, but for many the organization is just an extension of the Tennessee athletics family.
"It's so much fun getting to know all the other Timettes and getting to know the team," Timettes' co-captain Adrienne West said. "They have become some of my best friends and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything."
Their behind-the-scenes work gives them an insider's perspective on the team. They get a chance to see how the program functions and what makes the Tennessee swimming and diving program so strong.
"It all starts with Coach Trembley," Howell said. "His passion for Tennessee and for success really drives everyone involved with the program. It's contagious and it pushes everyone to work hard."
