The Southeastern Conference awarded Tennessee junior swimmer Brad Craig and sophomore diver Ryan Helms the conference's athletes of the week following the Vols' 166-134 win over LSU last week.
Craig claimed two wins against LSU in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. The Midland, Mich., native swam a 56.35 mark in the 100 followed by a 2:03.40 time in the 200. Craig finished second behind UT school record holder Michael Christy in the 200 I.M. with a 1:52.82 time. He added eight more points between the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay to be the Vols' top point winner against the Tigers.
Craig also holds the SEC's top 100 breaststroke time and is second in the conference in the 200 breast.
Helms, the defending SEC Freshman Diver of the Year is still shining as a sophomore, is sweeping the season's first diving competition at LSU. On the one-meter, the Moultrie, Ga., native claimed top honors with a 312.00 mark over the Tigers' Brian Gemberling. Helms had a particularly brilliant day on the three-meter, just missing his career-best mark by fewer than seven points with a mark of 397.57. His career best is 404.40.
Helms leads the SEC on the three-meter springboard and ranks fourth in the conference on the one-meter. This is his second SEC Diver of the Week honor. The last came in week three of the 2008-09 season.
The Vols travel to face rival Louisville on Friday. Tennessee beat the Cardinals last season in Knoxville, 185-113.
