Three Vols Earn SEC Swimming Honors

Senior UT swimmer Octavio Alesi was named to the 2008 SEC Men???s Swimming and Diving Community Service Team this month. The criterion for the award aims for student athletes who give back to the community through superior service efforts.
Alesi has participated in Habitat for Humanity, helped out with the Campus Beautification Program and was a participant in the Race for the Cure. The Barinas, Venezuela, native is an active member of SAAC and also reads to students at Belle Morris Elementary School. In addition, Alesi qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a 52.24 100 meter time at the PanAm Games, which ranked him 19th in the world at the time.
Redshirt Michael DeRocco and teammate Mattias Kahlin were also named to the 2008 SEC All-Freshman Team this month. The recipients of this award were the highest-placing freshmen in their respective events at the 2008 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. DeRocco received this award for his efforts in the 50 freestyle, where he finished 16th. Kahlin earned the award after finishing fifth the 100 breaststroke.
