Aqua Vols Take on Hoosiers
January 17, 2008 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The No. 6 Tennessee men???s swimming and diving team prepare for Friday???s dual meet against the No. 7 Indiana Hoosiers. The meet is set to commence at 11:30 a.m. in the UT Student Aquatic Center with one-meter diving. The first swimming event starts at 1 p.m.
???Indiana is a tremendous opponent,??? UT head coach John Trembley said. ???They have won multiple NCAA team titles and Big 10 championships. They reloaded at mid-year with a Croatian and a New Zealander. This will be a great challenge for Tennessee.???
History suggests that Friday???s meet will be another close matchup. The series, which dates back to 2003, is tied at 1-1. The Vols won the first meeting by a score of 141-93 and the Hoosiers won 149.5-85.5 in 2005.
???We need to win the close races,??? Trembley said. ???There are about six races that we have a fifty-fifty chance. Those will likely be the backstrokes, breaststrokes, distance freestyle and diving.???
This meet begins the toughest portion of the schedule for Coach Trembley and the Volunteers.
???This time of season is during which we need to be challenged,??? Trembley said. ???Three successive weekends, we face No. 7 Indiana, No. 9 Georgia and No. 5 Florida. If that doesn???t prepare us for SECs, then nothing will.???
The Vols start the gruesome three-week span Friday as the diving portion of the meet begins at 11:30 a.m. The swimming competition begins at 1 p.m.
