"Our team is pretty excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at SECs," UT head Coach John Trembley said. "First for our team members who will be shaving, since they are rested and tapered, this meet will be their focal meet of 2007. Approximately one-half of our team is training through the SEC meet in order to be better at the NCAA Championships."
Octavio Alesi, Brad Boswell, Andrew Engle, Nolan Morrell, Barry Murphy, Jeff Sudbury and Michael Wolfe are among the Vols who will not shave for the upcoming meet.
"For those Tennessee Volunteers, this will be a great challenge," Trembley said. "If we decided to shave and prepare our entire team for SECs, then we would probably finish third or fourth, but we believe our team performance at the NCAAs would suffer."
Trembley does not plan to minimize the importance of the meet but looks ahead to the NCAA Championships to build the swimming and diving program.
"Since seven of our team members have earned their invitation to NCAAs, we cannot take our eye off that competition," Trembley said. "Our program - in the eyes of national and international athletes - is measured by NCAA and International competition. So, we travel to Lexington eager to face both challenges and capitalize on opportunities."
The SEC meet begins at noon with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.
"We're healthy and swimming better this year than last year at this time," Trembley said. "I expect our team members who are not shaving to stand tall and race hard. I expect those who are shaving to compete as they ever have in their lives."
Auburn heads into the meet leading with 177 points while the Vols begin fifth with 37. The SEC Championships conclude Saturday after the 400 freestyle relay.
