December 29, 2007 | Baseball
When former Tennessee baseball great Todd Helton (1993-95) becomes the first Volunteer ever to have his baseball jersey retired at the 16th annual Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet on Jan. 30, the ceremony will take place before a sellout crowd at the Knoxville Convention Center.
??
More than 1100 tickets have been sold for the event, which also will provide Tennessee fans with an opportunity to meet the 2008 Volunteers along with first-year head coach Todd Raleigh and his staff.
??
The four-figure crowd will be the largest in the banquet???s history, exceeding the crowd of approximately 900 who attended the 2005 banquet when Atlanta Braves standout Chipper Jones was the guest speaker.
??
In addition to his historic jersey retirement, Helton also will become the 17th person inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame. This fall, Helton made his first career MLB postseason appearance. The five-time All-Star helped lead the Colorado Rockies to the World Series.
