The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team earned a 3.13 team GPA for the Fall semester. This exceptional average qualifies the team for CSCAA Academic All-America honors.
"All too often, each part of a University system is too concerned with their corner of the world," head swim coach John Trembley said. "Perhaps coaches are concerned too much with athletic performance, teachers may be too concerned with scholastic performance and students are sometimes too concerned with social life. It is a joy to be the coach of a team like this one which has great balance. In fact, our team qualified for Academic All-America again."
Leading the academic charge are Brad Boswell, Greg Houchin, Frankie Lacayo, Peter McVey, Michael Muscari, Jonas Persson, Ryan Rincon, Michael Russo, Jordan Walters, Chris Wary, Michael Wolfe and Travis Wright who all earned over a 3.0 GPA this Fall.
"We have so many student-athletes at a 3.0 GPA or above," said Trembley. "And we have quite a few students at a 3.5 GPA or above which is testimony to the support they have received from their families, academic advisors and peers. Perhaps, even the coaches played a part in that as well."
During the Fall, the Vols boasted a 6-0 record along with a second place finish at the Princeton Invitational in New Jersey as the semester came to a close. Adding a 3.13 team GPA only makes their Fall accomplishments more impressive.
"I'm pleased to recognize that while this still is an academic award," Trembley said, "this award speaks more to the concept of public education which is comprised of academics, athletics and social-growth. I'm very proud of our team but I still expect, however, that they reach greater heights at the end of the Spring semester and exceed their performance they have accomplished up to this point in all areas of education."
