NO. 22 LADY VOL TENNIS FALLS TO 28TH-RANKED KENTUCKY

LEXINGTON, Ky. The 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team (9-9, 5-3 Southeastern Conference) fell to No. 28 Kentucky (14-6, 7-1 SEC) by a 6-1 score on Sunday afternoon.
Winning at No. 2 singles in the second-to-last match to finish was junior Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.), who defeated Lara Maurer, 6- 3, 6-3. The final contest to complete saw senior Melissa Schaub (Lexington, Ohio) play at No. 1 for the first time in her career and narrowly miss earning the biggest win of her career (based on opponent's national ranking), falling in a supertiebreaker to No. 39 Kim Coventry, 6-4, 3-6, (10-5).
The first doubles match to finish saw the Lady Vol No. 3 freshman duo of Samantha Orlin (Miami, Fla.) and Hayley Prendergast (Hingham, Mass.) fall to Danielle Petrisko and Caroline Winebrenner, 8-0. UK took the double spoint when Schaub and sophomore Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa) dropped a tight 9-7 decision on court one to Coventry and Carolina Escamilla.
Finishing out doubles play were juniors Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) and Jones, who fell to Maurer and Joelle Schwenk at 2 by an 8-7 (7- 3) score.
After Kentucky took No. 6 singles due to a UT forfeit, Orlin dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision at court five to Escamilla. The Wildcats clinched the team win when Griffith fell at court three to Schwenk, 6-1, 6-2. Schutte lost at No. 4 to Petrisko, 6-1, 6-4.
The Lady Vols will complete the home portion of their schedule next weekend, taking on No. 61 Ole Miss at 5 p.m. on Friday and Mississippi State at 1 p.m. next Sunday. Schaub will be honored that day as Tennessee's lone senior.
