Jonas Persson, a junior on Tennessee's men's swimming and diving team, won the Swedish National Short-Course Championship in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:45.26. The event took place in Uppsala, Sweden.
"It is always fun to come back to see my family, friends and club coaches," Persson said.
His time of 1:45.26, converted to a short-course yard time of 1:34.26, would be good enough for the top time in UT history.
Persson also competed in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing third in 48.92. He has been consistently working towards these times and will continue to train at the University of Tennessee until the World Championships in April.
"The training (at UT) has been working well for me, good enough to put up such good times," Persson said. "My goal is to work towards the Olympics in 2008 and World Championships in Melbourne in early April of 2007.
"I am putting in 100-percent effort here at UT, and I have a great bunch of guys to work with. The coaching staff here is one of the best in the country."
Persson is sitting out the 2006-07 season after transferring from the University of Arizona, and he will compete for the Vols during the 2007-08 season.
