The 13th-ranked Tennessee men's swimming and diving team triumphed over 15th-ranked Virginia 134-109 Friday at the UT Student Aquatic Center.
"Across the board it was a good day," said UT head coach John Trembley. "We need to be better in two weeks at the Princeton Invitational, but we are creeping up on some NCAA standards."
The meet saw some season-bests for UT swimmers. Senior Andrew Engle provided a strong relay leg as the 400 medley relay won the event with their best time of the season. Their time of 3:18.73 is three seconds above their previous best.
Nolan Morrell won the 200 free in 1:38.43 while Andrew Thirlwell followed in second with an lifetime best of 1:39.79. Virginia's Stefan Hirniak placed third in a time of 1:40.09.
Divers Michael Muscari and Ryan Rincon excelled today despite diving coach Dave Parrington's absence. Parrington is fulfilling duties in Minneapolis with the Lady Vol diving squad.
"Our divers dominated the boards," said Coach Trembley. "Student assistant John Venditti stepped in and did a fine job of keeping our divers calmed and focused."
Muscari, a freshman, scored 270.68 points on the 1-meter board. Rincon finished third in that event with 238.65 points. Rincon won the 3-meter diving with 313.05 points, while Muscari finished second with 280.13 points.
Other top performances included Barry Murphy, Engle, and Andrew Van Meter finished first (20.52), second (21.01) and third (21.41), respectively, in the 50 free. Michael Wolfe won the 200 I.M. in 1:50.83. Octavio Alesi placed first in the 100 free in 44.22 and Morrell finished second in 45.35.
Next on the schedule, the Vols will head to the DeNunzio Pool in Princeton, N.J., to compete in the Princeton Invitational Dec. 1-3.
