NASHVILLE -- University of Tennessee freshman Andrew Engle, competing for Tennessee Aquatics, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials Friday while competing in the 2004 Nashville Aquatic Club Summer Sizzler at the Centennial Sportsplex.
Engle finished second in the 100-meter butterfly in 55.37 seconds at the Summer Sizzler Invitational. This was the last opportunity for Americans to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
"This was a big step for Andrew and his career," UT head coach John Trembley said.
A pair of sophomore Vols also swimming for Tennessee Aquatics, Tyler Gustafson and Bryan Goldberg, finished one-two in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.21 and 1:55.59, respectively. Junior Brad Duryea finished fourth in 1:56.80.
Departing senior Andrew Bree, who hopes to earn a spot on Ireland's Olympic team, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.74. Sophomore Michael Russo also competed in the 100 breast, finishing fourth in 1:07.38.
The U.S. Olympic Trials will be held July 7-14 in Long Beach, Calif.
