MINNEAPOLIS - Tennessee divers Phillip Jones and Jevon Tarantino, needing a first- or second-place finish to earn an automatic bid for the Olympic Trials in three-meter synchronized diving, finished third Thursday at the Speedo America's Cup Diving Championships in Minneapolis.
Jones and Tarantino finished with 315.87 points, less than four points behind the second-place team of Justin Wilcock and Clayton Moss (319.02) in a very tight contest. Troy and Justin Dumais won the competition with 331.32.
"Our guys dove well today," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "We are obviously disappointed to finish third in such a close contest because we put our situation in the hands of somebody else. Hopefully we will get qualified for the Olympic Trials and do a better job."
The Vol divers should know within two or three days if they will make this summer's Olympic Trials, which consists of eight teams. A point selection process determines who makes the trials.
Tarantino will be competing Friday on the three-meter board.
