VOLS COMPETING IN NCAAs
Reigning national champion Phillip Jones heads a contingent of 14 Tennessee swimmers and divers competing at the NCAA Championships in East Meadow, N.Y. Thursday. The meet runs through Saturday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
Jones, a junior who captured last year's three-meter board title, recently claimed his second SEC crown in the event.
"This has been probably the most unique team I've had (in 16 years at Tennessee)," head coach John Trembley said. "Our guys have remained discipline and focused on the NCAAs. Coming off a 16th-place finish last year at the NCAAs has been motivating."
The Aqua Vols appear to be a dark horse in the competition. Overlooked by many, the Vols have seven individuals who are making a repeat trip back to nationals. Leading the list is co-captain Andrew Bree in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes. He is looking to improve on 10th-place and 24th-place finishes, respectively, in the 100- and 200-meter events a year ago, when he was slowed by an ankle injury.
"We are taking some very good athletes," Trembley said. "Andrew Bree has been an Olympian and is one of the fastest breast-strokers in school history. Casey Dauw broke the school record in the 400-meter individual medley and our two divers (Jones and Jevon Tarantino) are two of the best divers on the planet.
"Our team is focused," Trembley said. "They are well prepared and excited to see how we compare against the top teams in America."
