Vols Qualify Two for Nationals

ATHENS, Ga.-- The Tennessee men's diving team qualified two on the three-meter board Friday for the upcoming NCAA championships at the Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia.
Freshman Jevon Tarantino took the top spot with a score of 611.90 in the three-meter qualifier followed by teammate Phillip Jones with 599.10. Tarantino and Jones are coming off their SEC titles in the one-meter and three-meter, respectively, at the same pool two weeks ago.
"I'm very pleased with the effort today," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Phillip was a little off the mark, but he has been out of the water for a week with the flu. Jevon made up for a disappointing conference meet on the three-meter. He made the corrections we have worked on, and it obviously paid off."
"I started off pretty good with a solid list of dives, but I need to be more consistent," Tarantino said. "My optional dives list was good enough, and, with a little work on my required list, I'll be unstoppable."
The divers compete Saturday morning as they try to qualify on the one-meter board. Tarantino and Jones are also favorites on the one-meter board. Tarantino and Jones finished one-two at the SEC championships on the one-meter.
From the nation's five zones, 35 total divers will qualify to form the NCAA championships field. As a testament to the strength of Zone B, the zone has 13 qualifying spots for the NCAAs.
As a team, the Vols' next competition is the NCAA championships March 25-27 in Long Island, N.Y.
