KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Three members of the Tennessee men's swimming and diving squad were honored at Neyland Stadium during Tennessee's home opener against Fresno State. Junior Phillip Jones and sophomore Bryan Goldberg were honored during pregame activities for their achievements during international summer competition, while Greg Simpson was named the edsouth Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Jones is a returning NCAA champion who finished 11th in the world on the 3-meter springboard at the World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, this past July. Jones finished 9th in the morning prelims in a very tough field of 45 divers. The top 18 then moved onto the semis later in the afternoon where Jones slipped one spot to 10th and then dropped one more spot in the evening's finals.
Goldberg won a gold medal as part of the United States' 800m freestyle relay at the recently completed Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Goldberg swam the second leg of America's 800m free relay, with splits of 52.90 and 56. 90 for a 1.49:80. The team of Ryan Lochte (Florida), Goldberg, Jeff Lee (Southern California) and Dan Ketchum (Michigan) won in 7:18.93, a Pan Am Games record.
Simpson, a fifth-year team member, was named the edsouth Scholar Athlete of the Year for his achievements in the pool as well as in the classroom. A marketing major with a 3.94 GPA, he also earned All-America honors the past four years at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
