March 24, 2001 | Women's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team fell for just the second time in the dual season on Friday in a hard-fought 4-3 decision at Florida. The No. 5 rated Gators have never lost an SEC match at The Swamp, their win-streak stands at 102 matches.
The No. 9 Lady Vols dropped the doubles point for the second straight match. UT's No. 45 rated tandem of Vilmarie Castellvi and Kim Gates fell to Florida's No. 10 rated team of Whitney Laiho and Jessica Lehnhoff, 8-3. Alison Ojeda and Crystal Cleveland, remain undefeated (8-0) at the No. 2 slot for co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick. The pair upset the No. 46 rated Gator duo of Stephanie Hazlett and Julie Scaringe, taking the match at 8-5. Juniors Dana Noel and Agnes Wiski were blanked at No. 3 doubles to surrender the point.
The Lady Vols entered the singles portion of the match needing to win four out of the six matches, a daunting task that the team accomplished against North Carolina on Wednesday. It was not to be on this day though. Ojeda, who moved up in the ITA rankings to No. 65, fell to the No. 10 rated Laiho, 1-6, 4-6 and Gates stumbled at the two-slot, falling 0-6, 3-6 to No. 27 Lehnhoff. Wiski dropped a 3-6, 0-6 decision at the No. 4 singles position.
UT's points came from a Castellvi-win at No. 3 singles when UF's Hazlett defaulted due to injury. Castellvi had won the first set when the match was stopped. Cleveland picked up her ninth straight "W" at No. 5 singles. Cleveland got the better of Julia Scrainge in a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Freshman Brooke Cordell, who clinched UT's victory over UNC on Wednesday, won her third consecutive match at No. 6. Cordell defeated Annika Bengtsson, 0-6, 6-4 (7).
Tennessee falls to 14-2 overall, 4-1 in SEC play. The Lady Vols return to the friendly confines of the Varsity Courts on Sunday, where they will take-on the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The match is slated to begin at noon.
