5-2 Triumph Caps Lady Vol Tennis Opening Weekend

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Solid play from the No. 1 through 4 singles slots propelled the 17th rated University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer Tennis team over Illinois on Sunday, February 4. The victory improves the Big Orange's record to 2-0.
Juniors Alison Ojeda (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) and Agnes Wiski (Flushing, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo), and sophomores Vilmarie Castellvi (Guaynabo, P.R./Academia San Jose Villa Caparra) and Crystal Cleveland (Delray Beach, Fla./Westminster Academy) all captured their matches in singles play, earning the Orange and White four out of the six points up for grabs in the singles portion of the match. The two Illinois points where won at the No. 5 and 6 singles spots. The Fighting Illini's Carla Rosenburg defeated freshman Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor), 3-6, 5-7, and Michelle Webb got the better of senior Catherine Hall (Boone, N.C./Watauga) in a 1-6, 0-6 decision.
Co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick's squad picked up the one doubles point as two out of its three pairings brought back wins. Ojeda and Castellvi picked up their second straight victory with a 9-7 decision over Eldina Fazlic and Webb. The other triumph came at the racquets of Cleveland and Cordell. The No. 3 doubles tandem is now 4-1 as a pair.
The Lady Vols will open their home schedule on Feb. 11 against Michigan. The match will be played at the Goodfriend Tennis Center or outdoors at the Varsity Courts (weather permitting) and is set to begin at noon.
