Baseball Rallies to Defeat MTSU
April 05, 2000 | Baseball
Murfreesboro, Tenn. - Jamie Bennett tossed his third complete game while picking up his seventh victory as Tennessee (27-10) rallied to defeat Middle Tennessee State (16-14), 2-1, at Reese Smith Field on April 4.
Bennett, who retired the last 10 batters he faced, pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven while walking only one. He outdueled Blue Raider starter Jamie Powers (1-4) who no-hit the Vols for 6 1/3 innings before yielding the tying and winning runs on two hits in the seventh. Jeremy Armstrong pitched the final two innings for MTSU, allowing one hit.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Jeff Christensen broke up Powers' no-hit bid with a single to left. Justin Parker followed with his ninth double to move Christensen to third.
Shortstop Wes Whitehead's second error of the game allowed Christensen to score the game tying run while Parker moved to third on error and later scored on Ryan Moffett's perfectly executed sacrifice bunt for the go-ahead run.
The Blue Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on Brandon Johnson's two-out bloop single to center that plated Justin Links who doubled to left with one out.
Tennessee will play host to Belmont, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
