Mississippi State Defeats The Vols 7-3

Starkville, Miss. (April 28) - Kevin Donovan struck out 10 in eight innings and Ty Martin went 3-for-4 with a double as the Mississippi State Bulldogs (31-12, 12-7 SEC) defeated the Tennessee Volunteers (35-18, 7-13 SEC), 7-3, at Dudy Noble Field before a crowd of 4,403.
Donovan (4-3), who gave up a lead off double to Chris Burke, retired the next 13 batters before Justin Parker singled to second for Tennessee's second hit in the fifth. Burke had three hits and Parker collected two to lead the Vols.
Adam Larson worked the ninth to close out the game, and every Bulldog collected a hit as Mississippi State out hit Tennessee 12-8.
The Bulldogs rocked Tennessee starter Kurt Scott (1-2) for four runs in the third as they banged out five hits. They sent seven men to the plate, scoring runs on a groundout by Phillip Willingham, a passed ball, a sacrifice fly by John Knott and Jamie Rock's single to center.
Run scoring singles by Ryan McGrath and Willingham in the fourth extended MSU's lead 6-0.
Tennessee scratched out two runs in the seventh as the first four batters reached on three singles and a catcher's interference. Ryan Case and Kris Bennett each drove in runs after Parker singled to lead off and Jeff Baumtrog reached on the interference.
The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run to make it 7-2 in the eighth after Martin doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on Daron Wright's base hit.
Burke singled home Baumtrog in the ninth for Tennessee's third run.
