April 01, 2000 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE -- The #22 Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team recorded five singles wins and swept through the doubles matches to notch a 7-2 decision over #26 Kentucky on Saturday in Knoxville at the Varsity Courts. The Lady Vols improve to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference, while Kentucky falls to 10-8 and 2-7.
"As beat up as we are, we're playing really well," said head coach Mike Patrick. "It was great for Candy (Reid) to win in doubles, and Kentucky has two top-50 doubles teams, so we had two good victories there."
In her final home match, senior Candy Reid lost a tough 7-6, 3-6, 3-6 decision at No. 5 singles to the Wildcats' Lauren Rookledge. But, she paired up with sophomore Agnes Wiski to pull out a 9-8 (7) win over UK's #42 Brook Skeen and Leigh Bradwell in the No. 2 doubles slot.
Sophomore Alison Ojeda and freshman Vilmarie Castellvi claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, defeating #22 Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten 8-1. Both Lady Vols also tallied singles victories: Ojeda topped Mayorga, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Castellvi notched a 6-2, 6-4 No. 3 singles win over Witten. The UT doubles pair of freshman Crystal Cleveland and sophomore Meiling Parks also added points on both ends. The duo won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles, while Parks defeated Amy Trefethan, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, and Cleveland recorded her ninth consecutive win, dropping Bradwell, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6.
"After Florida tomorrow, we are on the road for the rest of the season," Patrick added. "We just have to focus and get rested for SECs in a few weeks."
Tennessee will play host to Florida on Sunday at noon in the final home match of the season.
