Chris Burke goes 4-for-5 to lead Tennessee
KNOXVILLE - Chris Burke went 4-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Tennessee Volunteers to a 18-3 win over Dayton in non-conference action March 15.
Tennessee improved to 19-6 on the season while dropping the Flyers of Dayton to 3-10 on the year. The Vols used the mid-week match-up with Dayton as a tune-up before heading to Oxford, Miss., over the weekend to face Ole Miss in their second SEC match-up.
Sophomore second baseman Chris Burke led all Tennessee batters as he notched four hits on five at-bats. Burke improved his season batting average to .441 which is a team best.
The Vols got 21 hits on the afternoon while holding Dayton to just six. For the first time this season, the Vols got hits from all nine starters with eight tallying multiple hit games.
Tennessee stormed out in the first inning off a RBI by Stevie Daniel that scored Chris Burke for the first run of the game. The Vols used a four-hit first inning to score three runs to give them a 3-0 lead going into the top of the second. The Vols would get eight runs in the next three innings to pull away taking an 11-0 lead into the fifth.
Sophomore Wyatt Allen got the win for Tennessee and moves to 2-1 on the season while Kent Dupue took the loss for Dayton and falls to 0-2. The Vols will travel to Oxford, Miss. on Thursday for a weekend series with Ole Miss (13-6) beginning on Friday. Tennessee is currently 1-2 in SEC play while Ole Miss is 2-1 after taking a series win over Florida in Gainesville last weekend. Tennessee will play at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on Friday and Saturday and will close out the series with a 2:30 p.m. (ET) game on Sunday.
