About the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center
The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center provides Tennessee athletes with the finest strength and conditioning, dressing, health care, meeting and coaching facilities in the country.
Completed in 1989 at a cost of $11 million, the 120,000-square-foot, two-level structure is named in memory of former Vols head football coach and athletics director General Robert R. Neyland (1926-62) and Knoxville businessman B. Ray Thompson (1906-87).
The main level of the facility features a new 120-yard AstroTurf Gameday Grass 3DH field, provided by Dalton (Ga.)-based AstroTurf, LCC. The new field, installed in October 2010, simulates the feel and performance of real grass and also includes details like the checkerboard end zones and Power T at midfield.
Adjacent to the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center is Haslam Field, home to Tennessee's three full-size outdoor football practice fields.
The indoor field sits under a 65-foot ceiling and is named in honor of Chattanooga businessman and UT alumnus Robert E. White, who donated $1 million to finance initial construction of the field and support five full athletic scholarships on an annual basis.
The facility houses the Carmichael Strength Facility as well as the Tim Kerin Training Room on the ground floor.
The Neyland-Thompson Sports Center also includes an equipment distribution center and a locker storage center directly behind the north end zone. Also nearby on the ground floor is a players' lounge.
The upper level of the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center overlooks the practice field and has four observation decks.
The upper level houses coaches' offices, conference rooms and a team auditorium with more than 100 oversized seats that also includes a projection room.
The north entrance of the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center serves as a corridor to and from Stokely Hall and is used regularly by Tennessee student-athletes who call that residence hall home. That exterior entrance area also serves as home to the Doug Dickey Hall of Fame Plaza, a well manicured gathering space in which University of Tennessee Athletics Hall of Fame inductees are honored with individualized pavers. The 5,000 square-foot plaza also features a bronze bust of Dickey. The plaza was officially dedicated on Oct. 4, 2019.
